Make It Your Race 2012 has the ‘green light’ and is now taking pre-registrations… Go to www.makeityourrace.it and put your name forward for selection. When you get to the Make It Your Race 2012 website watch the short movie to get an idea of what Make It Your Race is all about, then, exit from the movie (click the x in the top right hand corner) and follow the instructions… If you are between 18 and 40 years old and are not a professional driver (i.e. you don’t have a competition motor racing license) you can complete the pre-registration form… it’s as simple as that!

Once selected you will be part of this thrilling driving experience AND be part of the Make It Your Race TV Talent Show which is being filmed this summer. There will be driving sessions and track days in Italy with expert driver tuition and coaching… great fun and a chance to improve your driving skills at the wheel of an Abarth. This is your chance to have the experience of a lifetime; so, if you have octane in your blood and are a real ‘petrol-head’… all you have to do is put your name forward for selection. Go ahead… Make It Your Race!

Make It Your Race started last year in Italy but has been opened to more European countries this year so there is the chance to test your driving skills and car control talents against drivers from Germany, France, Italy and Spain. The selected few will then travel to Italy to be selected for the final trackday tests in June… all ‘Powered by Abarth’. Make It Your Race!

Our condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him. Trivellato, a well respected Abarth tuner was one of the most important figures in Italian motorsport history although not widely recognised or acknowledged – he also ‘discovered’ many drivers who reached Formula One having had his own racing team in the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s… Some of the drivers he influenced include: Andrea De Adamich, Riccardo Patrese, Elio De Angelis, Roberto Ravaglia, Gerhard Berger, Pier Luigi Martini and Luca Badoer.’Pino’ was a driver in his own right, before turning to driver coaching and team management, racing in the ETCC during the 1960′s driving an Abarth on many occasions.

In 1964 he competed in a number of events including hill climb which, in those ‘golden years of motorsport’ featured in the World Championship – please see below some of the results from that year and note just how many Abarths are mentioned… Abarth Porsche, Abarth Simca and, of course, Fiat Abarth and this doesn’t include the cars/teams that didn’t make it to the chequered flag!

Three championships will be on track: the Europe Abarth 500 Trophy, the Italy Abarth 500 Trophy and the new Abarth 500 Trophy Benelux – each with six races – the Europe Abarth 500 Trophy calendar includes Dijon (France, 6 May), Mugello (Italy, 10 June), A1 Ring (Austria, 5 August), Imola (Italy, 2 September), Spa (Belgium, 16 September) and Monza (Italy, 21 October). The new Benelux Abarth 500 Trophy will visit Dijon (France, 6 May), Zandvoort (Netherlands, 3 June), Spa (Belgium, 8 July), Colmar-Berg (France, 22 July), Spa (Belgium, 16 September) and Zolder (Belgium, 7 October).

Rallying has been important to Abarth for many years and ‘the Scorpion’ has scored victories on many of the same events over the years. Two rally events carry a special magic, the San Remo and the Tour de Corse; both tarmac rallies.

The Tour de Corse – ‘Rallye de France’ – is a rally first held in 1956 on the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean. It was part of the World Rally Championship from the 1973 season to 2008 and is known as the “Ten Thousand Turns Rally” because of the twisty mountain roads. Two drivers have won the event six times; Bernard Darniche (1970, 1975, 1977 – Fiat 131 Abarth, 1978 – Fiat 131 Abarth, 1979 and 1981) and Didier Auriol (1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995) – three times in Abarth prepared Lancia.

The first “Rallye Internazionale di San Remo” was held in 1928. The rally name’s French word “rallye”, as opposed to Italian “rally”, was inspired by Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo. Rallye San Remo was originally run on tarmac and gravel but from 1997 it has been an all-tarmac rally. Having been on the WRC schedule for many years, Rallye San Remo has been part of the Italian Rally Championship and since 2006, it has been a round of the IRC Intercontinental Rally Challenge. The last time an Abarth won the event was in 2008 on the historic 50th Rallye Sanremo with Giandomenico Basso driving an Abarth Grande Punto S2000 to victory.

The winner of the Trofeo Abarth 500 Europe, Alex Campani, and the winner of the Trofeo Abarth 500 Italy, Nicola Baldan, relished the opportunity to race in the Ferrari Challenge World Finals – this was a reward for winning their respective Abarth 500 Championships. The Ferrari Challenge World Finals took place at the Mugello circuit last weekend. Both drivers drove well and stepped onto the podium of the F430 Challenge Italy: Baldan in race 1 and Campania in race 2. The Ferrari 430 with 490hp of V8 power being quite a change from the Abarth 500 Trofeo cars!

Ferrari Challenge

The Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli – Italia is a single-brand championship introduced by Ferrari in 1993, open for clients taking their first steps on a race track in the Coppa Shell, and drivers with motorsport experience, taking part in the Trofeo Pirelli main category: the Championship is held on seven tracks, mainly in Italy.

The Finali Mondiali Ferrari at Mugello

The Finali Mondiali Ferrari at the Mugello circuit is a spectacular event for any Ferrari fan; this was the 19th running of the event. The 458s and F430s in the Italian, European, North American and Asia Pacific series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli were battled for the world title. The busy programme featured sessions for historic Formula 1 cars, run by Maranello’s F1 Clienti Department, as well as the FXX and 599XX. The final races of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli saw the 2011 world champions crowned. The Trofeo Pirelli title went to Lorenzo Bontempelli to add to his International GT Open crown. Having secured the Italian crown, Andrea Belluzzi took the world title for the F430 drivers. After the exciting racing came a parade of Ferraris in honour of 150 years of Italian Unity. Those taking part included president Luca di Montezemolo; vice-president, Piero Ferrari; managing director, Amedeo Felisa and the Scuderia’s team principal Stefano Domenicali along with drivers; Giancarlo Fisichella and Marc Gene. Also on track the 458 GT2 and GT3 cars run by AF Corse to victory in the Le Mans Series and FIA GT3 championships.

A glimpse into the Abarth motor sport heritage… in racing we trust!

Grab a coffee, sit back and watch some great video footage of Abarth ‘back in the day’… this rare film footage captures Abarth himself along with many of the cars that carry the Scorpion badge. When we say Abarth has it’s roots in motor racing you’ll see here exactly why… Abarth tuned Fiat cars for race and road performance but also built and developed racing cars that competed worldwide – from Monza to Sebring, Nurburgring to Le Mans. When you drive an Abarth 500 or Abarth Punto today they have the same DNA running through them… there is no such thing as a pseudo ABARTH – they are the real thing and can trace their heritage back to the cars you’ll see in these wonderful videos. Enjoy!

And here some footage of motor racing legend Tazio Nuvolari who knew Carlo Abarth well; seen here in a very early Abarth Cisitalia

Tazio Giorgio Nuvolari (16 November 1892 – 11 August 1953) is to this day a motor racing legend in Italy; he was an Italian motorcycle and racing driver, known as ‘Il Mantovano Volante’ (The Flying Mantuan) or ‘Nivola’. He was the 1932 European Grand Prix Champion. Respected by his fellow drivers and peers; Dr. Ferdinand Porsche called Nuvolari “The greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future”. As with Carlo Abarth, Nuvolari started racing motorcycles and by 1925 he had won the 350cc European Championship. He continued to race motorcycles until 1930 while also racing cars but in 1931 he decided to concentrate fully on car racing and signed for Alfa Romeo’s factory team, Alfa Corse. In 1932 he took two wins and a second place in the three European Championship Grands Prix, winning him the title. He won four other Grands Prix including a second Targa Florio and the Monaco Grand Prix. Nuvolari then raced for Scuderia Ferrari, Maserati and Auto Union in a career that spanned the both World Wars – his final race was in 1950 when he finish first in class and fifth overall.

Cisitalia – Italian sports and racing car constructor. The name “Cisitalia” derives from “Compagnia Industriale Sportive Italia”. The business was founded in Turin in 1946 by Piero Dusio. Dante Giacosa had designed the classic Fiat 500 Topolino and used his Fiat knowledge to good effect when he designed the D46 which made its debut in 1946. The engine and suspension came from the Fiat but were modified for racing. Later, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to design and construct a full Grand Prix – the Cisitalia 360. The two-seater Cisitalia “202″ GT transformed postwar automobile body design; all the cars were handmade by the small team at Cisitalia which included Carlo Abarth. The SMM Nuvolari Spider was built and named after the class victory in the 1947 Mille Miglia – it was called the SMM for Spider Mille Miglia. In the 1947 Mille Miglia, the Cistitalia spider led most of the race, driven by Nuvolari, and finished second overall and first in class. A remarkable drive considering many of the other cars competing had much larger engines; to commemorate this future competition spiders were known as 202 SMM Nuvolari. The company struggled after the ambitious formula one car project and Cisitalia went into receivership in 1949 and was sold in 1952.

The Abarth connection: Abarth knew both Tazio Nuvolari and Ferry Porsche, and, with designer Piero Dusio he became involved in the Compagnia Industriale Sportiva Italia – CIS Italia; later becoming Cisitalia which also had the Italian Porsche Konstruktionen agency (1943–48). Abarth continued to work with Porsche on a number of projects in the future but his relationship with Fiat was what he became most recognised for following the founding of Abarth & C. with Cisitalia racing driver Guido Scagliarini in Turin on the 31st March 1949. Carlo Abarth really established his association with Fiat in 1952 when he built the Abarth 1500 Biposto using Fiat parts.

The European Championship is the international motorsport series with the longest tradition, the first edition dates back to 1953 while the World Championship has been held since 1973. Luca Rossetti said: “I dedicate the victory to Ing. Wester (CEO of Abarth n.d.r.) who has always believed in me, and to all the people at Abarth. I am proud to have won this title with an Italian car. For me it is an honour to race with them, I hope with this win to have repaid them for their trust. Our season has been troubled as we have sometimes had problems, but this only gives a better taste to the result we obtained. I thank all those who contributed to this success, and in particular Michelin and United Business, who has been taking care of my sports management for years”. At the Rallye du Valais, Luca Rossetti ended the first leg in second place overall, first among the drivers of the European Championship, however the end of the leg offered a small thrill as 2 kms from the end of the third special stage the gearbox broke, an issue that did not prevent the Abarth crew from ending the first day in the lead and gaining the vital points necessary to win the continental title.

ERC Standings 2011

FIA European Rally Champioship 2011 has finished and here are the final standings. The calendar was divided into two groups, respectively with the first 5 events and last 6 events of the year. The maximum number of results counting for the general classification was 4 in each group. In total, the 8 best results of the season were considered for the general classification. In order to be classified in the final standings of the championship, drivers had to participate in a minimum of 5 events, with at least 1 rally in each group of events.

Sergey Sirotkin takes the Formula Abarth Title 2011

The first season of the Formula Abarth European Series came to an end at the Circuit de Catalunya with victory for Sergey Sirotkin (Euronova) who claimed his fifth win of the season to add to his pole position and fastest lap of the race. Second in the championship was Patric Niederhauser while Jenzer Motorsport won the constructors title. The ‘Rookies’ Title went to Gerard Barrabeig (BVM). The Mediterranean Trophy went to Kevin Joerg (Jenzer Motorsport) who won a free entry for the Italian 2012 season with Kumho providing free tyres.

Race one: Sergey Sirotkin battled with Luca Ghiotto (Prema Pwerteam) ahead of third placed driver, Emanuele Zonzini, who claimed his first career podium.
Race two: Robert Visoiu (Jenzer Motorsport) won the race, leading from lights to flag. The second position went to Patric Niederhauser while Luca Ghiotto was third.

The Formula Abarth has a test day organised by ACI-Sport on 14th November at the Franciacorta circuit; open to all drivers interested in the series for 2012. If you think that driving an Abarth Punto Evo Supersport is fun, then this is something else altogether

Abarth 500 Assetto Corse officially takes part in the Tour of Italy Automotive. The car will run in the special stages driven by Trophy Abarth 500 Rally Selenia Champion Fabio Tassone. Sharing the wheel on this famous event will be a great champion of the past, Arturo Merzario, who raced Abarth cars in the ‘Golden Era’ to many race victories, in a symbolic ‘passing of the torch’ between two generations who share a passion for the Scorpion. To celebrate the past and continue the nostalgic them the livery for this Abarth 500 has been specially prepared for this Tour of Italy; this follows the colour scheme of red, orange and yellow as carried by the Abarth prototypes that took part in the Tour of Italy Automotive in 1974. The Abarth 500 Assetto Corse is the same as those used in the Trofeo Abarth 500 Europe and the Abarth 500 Trophy Italy with an output of 190hp and a top speed of 220kph. A real test for this race car that will face 1677.92km with 115km of special road stages, 180km on track and 36km of super special stages. After a 22 year gap, the Tour of Italy Automotive, starts again from tomorrow, Tuesday 25 to Sunday, October 30. After a ceremonial start from the center of Turin (corner Via Roma, Piazza Castello) at tomorrow, the event goes live Wednesday with the first stage, from Turin to Monza, with 3 special stages on the road in Biella. Thursday involves a 6 lap race at Monza and another 2 special stages in Lombardy, then onto the circuit of Franciacorta where it runs a super special stage in the evening. On Friday a 15 lap race at Franciacorta followed by 2 special stages and a super special at the Autodromo of Modena. Then Imola hosts a 7 lap race, 2 special stages in the Apennines and another 7 lap race at Mugello before arrival in Arezzo. The final day on Sunday includes a super special stage in Mansfield and a 9 lap race at Vallelunga. This promises to be a very special event and will visit historic race tracks – perfectly fitting that Abarth is a part of it. Who will be the first to reproduce this striking colour scheme on their Abarth 500 in the UK?

The archive image is Arturo driving one of the distinctive red and yellow Abarth sports cars in period – judging by the other cars in the photograph this may well be on the 1974 Tour of Italy Automotive… maybe the Abarthisti out there can let us know?

ABARTH on the Road – Tour of Italy Automotive – UPDATE

Starting in Turin, with a big party last night, the Giro d’Automobile, the legendary sporting event that dates back 110 years following the first edition to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the unification of Italy. Of course Abarth has celebrated this with the Abarth 500c Convertible ‘Italy’ – a Limited Edition which makes involvement in this event even more emotional. The Abarth 500 Convertible Italy will precede the arrival of the Tour as it stops in various cities with special events and promotions at the Abarth dealer network along the way. The competitors will be led by the crew racing an Abarth 500 Assetto Corse; winners of the Trophy Abarth 500 Rally Selenia, Tassone & Grimaldi along with Arturo Merzario.
The “Abarth Interactive Car” – a special Abarth 500 Convertible will follow the entire route all week and will stop in various cities. On board; five bloggers will take turns to tell the story of the Giro live on their blogs and across the social media channels with photos, interviews with drivers and fans and capture the Abarth magic.

The “Abarth Interactive Car” will also be a free WiFi network will have an iPad and a MacBook on the network through which fans can comment live with their smartphone devices.“Abarth on the Road” – A special Abarth branded truck will be present throughout the tour which includes an Abarth 500 Assetto Corse driving simulator and all the official Abarth merchandise.

The “Abarth on the Road” tour:
October 25, Via Roma, Turin
October 26, Monza Circuit
October 27, Franciacorta circuit
October 28, Piazza Roma, Modena
October 29, Stadium of Arezzo
October 30, Vallelunga Circuit, Rome

October 27th update – the Abarth 500 AC team is in sixth place after the fast Monza circuit allowed the GT cars to use their power and speed to overtake the little 500 which had held second place after the tight and twisty sections and stages held over the previous days of the Giro D’Italia competition.

October 30th update - Tassone Merzario and Ghione finish 5th on the 2011 Tour of Italy Automotive in the Abarth 500: The Abarth 500 Assetto Racing drivers, Michael Tassone, Arturo Merzario, Jimmy Ghione and Fabio Grimaldi finished the Tour of Italy Automotive in 5th place overall. A great performance considering the opponents – most of them being Gran Turismo GT cars like Porsche and Lamborghini… but it was the fun of the event that made it special and emotional for the Abarth 500c Convertible Italy Special Edition. The Abarth 500 Assetto Corse did very well, especially on the rally special stages, which allowed the young winner of the Trofeo Abarth 500 Rally Championship, to achieve great times – the Abarth 500 Assetto Corse was very reliable and completed the Tour without any technical problems.

Tour of Italy Automotive, final standings :

1. Pitorri-Gagliardini (Porsche Cayman S)

2. Forato-White (Lamborghini Gallardo)

3. Vallino-Frascati (Seat Leon)

4. Romagnoli-Guiducci (Maserati GT)

5. Tassone-Merzario-Grimaldi-Ghione (Abarth 500)
