Abarth Racing and Rallying!

It’s been a superb year of Abarth motor racing and rallying with the Trofeo Abarth 500, Abarth 500 Rally and Formula Abarth continuing to thrill the fans across Europe and the Abarth Punto Competizione series being a huge success in Argentina. Here in the UK, Sarah Franklin became the Class B Champion in the Dunlop Production Touring Car Trophy while in Asia, British driver, Dan Wells, is fighting for the Formula Abarth Pilota China title. Thank you to all the fans who supported all the Abarth racing and rallying this year and thank you to all the drivers and teams, organisers and officials who made it possible. Here’s a selection to give you a photo-review of the year… we’re already looking forward to the Abarth race and rally action in 2013!

Abarth 500 Rally 2012

Manuel Villa, paired with Michele Ferrara of Abarth 500 R3T, won the Trofeo Abarth 500 Rally 2012, winning the Rallye du Valais in Switzerland.

ABARTH 500 RALLY SELENIA TROPHY: RALLYE DU VALAIS

The Abarth 500 Rally Trophy ended this weekend in Switzerland with the Rallye du Valais. The overall classification saw two drivers in the leading position: Marco Rocchieri, who runs with his brother Francesco, and Manuel Villa, co-driven by Michele Ferrara. The two drivers counted two wins each after a battle that has been fought throughout the 2012 rally season which has seen close competition at some fabulous and historic events: Rally 1000 Miglia and the Tour de Corse for Rocchieri; Rally del Friuli and Oriental Alps and San Remo for Villa so this rally became a ‘shootout’ for the title.

The Swiss rally, also part of the ERC European Rally Championship, ran over three parts. The first from Sion, near Martigny, on Thursday, October 25, the second takes place Friday and the third on Saturday. The course, completely on asphalt, was 695km long, 293km of which are timed, spread over 16 special stages.

This event was the finale for a superb season of tarmac rallying where the Abarth 500 R3T rally car showed, once again, what a great car the Abarth 500 is and that the spirit of Karl Abarth’s ‘small and wicked’ competition cars lives on.

Trofeo Abarth 500 - Abarth 500 Assetto CorseNicola Baldan, driving his Abarth 695 Assetto Corse, won the first two races of the Trofeo Abarth Italy at the circuit of Varano de ‘Melegari near Parma… The remarkable performance of the new Abarth 500 Assetto Corse on the twisty Varano circuit delivering a lap time of 1.15.664 – an average of 111.810mph! In both races he finished ahead of the young Alex Campani – resuming their fierce battles from last season when Baldan won the Abarth 500 Trofeo Italia; and Campani won the Abarth 500 Trofeo Europe. Abarth Race – Formula Abarth European Series

Formula Abarth European SeriesLuca Ghiotto was the winner of the first two races in Valencia with Nicholas Costa winning the third race of the weekend as the Formula Abarth season got underway in support of the WTCC and AutoGP events. At the second round; in front of a record 40,000 spectators, it was a display by Brazilian drivers with victory in race one by Nicolas Costa, Bruno Bonifacio won race two and the last race of the weekend with a great recovery from ninth place on the grid. Highlights of the Hungaroring’s races were broadcast live in more than 50 countries by Eurosport. The next race is at Mugello on the 10th June.

The Abarth 500 Trofeo Italia and Europe, Abarth 500 Rally and Formula Abarth European Series’ are proving to be the place where young racing and rally talent is discovered… just one example is Sergey Sirotkin, the young Russian who lifted the Formula Abarth crown in 2011. At just fifteen years old, Sirotkin graduated to single seaters from Karting in 2010, racing in the Formula Abarth series for Jenzer Motorsport. After a ‘learning year’ Sirotkin remained in Formula Abarth in 2011 – winning the European Formula Abarth Series title with five wins. In 2012, Sirotkin has entered the AutoGP World Series and is continuing to be ‘one to watch’… His first race at Monza saw him qualify on the front row and setting fastest lap in both races. At Valencia, he scored his first win and set fastest lap – becoming the youngest Auto GP winner. His record of four consecutive fastest laps broke the record previously held by Lotus F1 driver Romain Grosjean. In addition to his AutoGP campaign he is also competing in the Italian Formula Three Championship.

And now there is a British driver aiming to emulate this succes; again only fifteen years old, Gregor Ramsay has rapidly shown he is a rising star having recently been scouted and tested by the Ferrari Driver Academy at Ferraris F1 test circuit at Fiorano in Italy. Gregor had, before venturing into the Formula Abarth European Series, been competing as an Tony Kart Junior Team driver. Following Gregor’s introduction to car racing in 2011 and Formula Abarth (2 races), Gregor has continued to improve with strong finishes in Valencia and qualifying on the front row at the second event at the 4.35km Hungaroring circuit. We’ll keep watching his progress throughout the 2012 season.

Formula Pilota China

British racing driver, Dan Wells, heads East to fulfil his racing ambitions – Ex-Formula Renault UK driver, Dan Wells, has headed for Asia and a seat with the Hong Kong based KCMG racing team in the Formula Pilota China Series for 2012.

Dan Wells_Formula Pilota China - Formula AbarthDan Wells is having a successful season with 2 wins and the championship lead after rounds 4/5/6 of Formula Pilota China Championship at Ordos. Britain’s Dan Wells underlined his arrival on the Asian racing scene and his championship credentials with a near perfect weekend at the Ordos International Circuit in Inner Mongolia. Having a dominant victory in race one on Friday, Wells returned to the podium in race two with a third place finish and then saved the best until last with victory in race three with a last lap manoeuvre to pass polesitter Antonio Giavanizzi.

Following the extremely successful Formula Abarth in Europe, a new series, Formula Pilota China, was established in China in 2011. In the 2011 season, Formula Pilota China traveled to Guangdong, Shanghai F1, Ordos, Shanghai Tianma and Sepang, held 12 rounds (6 events) plus 1 FPC Final Master Race. The series attracted 8 teams, 26 drivers from 20 countries and regions. Having a strong connection with European motorsport has identified Formula Pilota China as one of the best stepping stones for young drivers to move forward to the next level, or, have a taste of single-seater racing after graduation from Karting. 2012 season, Formula Pilota China will have 6 triple-rounds events and 1 invitational race, traveling to Shanghai, Zhuhai, Taiwan and Sepang.
